Can we help children understand biodiversity and sustainability?

How do we relate to our environment? And can we help children understand the topics of biodiversity and sustainability, and what they mean to us? The Romanian School in Eindhoven invites everyone to the library to an event around these themes. For that we invited two experts, one from Utrecht University and one from Bucharest University, to make a bridge between The Netherlands and Romania. Through practical examples and fun workshops children will experience that the theme of environmental protection is common for all of us.

Ema Vrânceanu (Utrecht University) invites participants (children and parents) to explore how to use resources mindfully.  We will take Romania's rich biodiversity, traditional landscapes and lifestyles as an example. We start with two short videos on this topic, one about biodiversity and one about three Romanian pioneers in sustainability (Grigore Antipa, Constantin Brâncuși, Nicolae Georgescu-Roegen). We will then talk about why it is important to preserve nature, what it means to us. Then we will start thinking together how our modern economy impacts nature, focusing on how resources are limited and the importance of using them wisely. She will also talk a bit about different kinds of energy and which resources they use/which landscapes they affect. The session will conclude with a group discussion on ways we can be mindful of resources in our daily lives.

Dr. Marius Matache (University of Bucharest) presentation describes several projects dealing with biodiversity conservation in Romania. He will first explain for children the concepts of biodiversity, protected area, protected species, invasive species, etc, and the importance of biodiversity and threats affecting it. The core of the presentation consists of describing and discussing various programs and actions implemented in Romania with the specific aim of improving the conservation status of certain species in various protected areas.
