We will be reading 'Unfortunately she was a nymphomaniac: A new history of Rome's Imperial Women', by Joan Smith.
In this sharp and often witty critique, Smith examines how the media, the legal system, and history "misread" women. By looking at famous figures and criminal cases, she reveals the ways in which women are frequently pathologized or reduced to sexual stereotypes (like the 'nymphomaniac') to avoid addressing the systemic violence or injustice they face. It’s a brilliant study of the language used to discredit women.
