Kom deze middag langs en duik in een wereld vol taal, cultuur en creativiteit! Onze gratis workshops worden georganiseerd door verschillende taalgemeenschappen en bieden voor ieder wat wils:

Bulgaars
Activiteit: Martenitsa workshop
Doe mee met onze Martenitsa workshop (een leuke activiteit voor alle leeftijden) en maak kennis met de Bulgaarse traditie van gedraaide rode en witte draden, die symbool staan voor gezondheid, geluk en de naderende lente. Kinderen vinden het leuk om hun eigen Martenitsa te maken en die om hun pols te dragen of aan hun kleding te bevestigen, waarbij ze ze kunnen versieren met zelfgemaakte vormen.

Activiteit: Mijn Eerste Çini Bord
Mijn Eerste Cini Bord is een creatieve workshop voor kinderen van 5-12 jaar, geïnspireerd door de Turkse cultuur. Tijdens de activiteit ontdekken de kinderen cini, een traditionele Turkse wijze van versiering door hun eigen kleurrijke papieren borden te ontwerpen met gebruik van stiften en eenvoudige patronen. De workshop biedt een speelse introductie naar cultureel erfgoed terwijl creativiteit en zelfexpressie worden gestimuleerd in een warme, inclusieve omgeving.

Activiteit: Maak je eigen Boi Bumbá-os
O Boi is een mythische os die in het centrum van Bumba Meu Boi verblijft. Boi Bumbá is een Braziliaanse volksdans met menselijke figuren en fantasie dieren. De voorstelling vertelt het verhaal van de dood en wederopstanding van een os. Tijdens de workshop maken de kinderen hun eigen os en raken vertrouwd met het verhaal en de traditie van deze Braziliaans festiviteit.
 
Chinees
Activiteit: Chinese Papiersnijkunst
Chinese papiersnijkunst is cultureel symbool in China en een populaire vorm van volkskunst die werd opgenomen in de UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. Bekend om zijn unieke stijl, blijft het een gekoesterde culturele traditie in China. Tijdens deze workshop leer je over drie veelgebruikte Chinese symbolen: Shou (lang leven), Xi (dubbel geluk) en Chun (lente),
samen met drie klassieke motieven: de yuan as well as three classic motifs: yuanbao (welvaart), vlinder (vrolijkheid), en goudvis (welvaart en goede eigenschappen). Ontdek de culturele verhalen achter deze symbolen en maak je eigen papierknipsels om mee naar huis te nemen.

Activiteit: Ontdek de kunst van het Japanse papier knippen en vouwen, samen met traditioneel Japans speelgoed!
 
Perzisch
Activiteit: Maak je eigen boekenlegger met Perzische kalligrafie
 
Nederlands
Activiteit: Delfts blauw voor kinderen
Nederlandse ambachtslieden For centuries, schilderen al eeuwen lang verhalen op Delfts blauwe tegels. Kinderen kunnen deze traditie voortzetten door hun eigen tegel te maken in klassiek blauw en wit. Ze kunnen een oude Nederlandse voorstelling kiezen, een historisch patroon of een bekend figuur uit een prentenboek zoals Nijntje, het bekende konijntje.
Een creatieve activiteit waar traditie en verbeelding samenkomen.

Ontdek nieuwe culturen, deel verhalen en leer samen met andere kinderen nieuwe dingen. Iedereen is welkom, van jong tot oud!

Waarom deze dag?
De Internationale Dag van de Moedertaal, uitgeroepen door UNESCO, viert elk jaar op 21 februari de kracht van taalkundige en culturele diversiteit. Door onze moedertalen te koesteren, versterken we tradities, bevorderen we begrip en brengen we mensen dichter bij elkaar.

Celebrate International Mother Language Day at the Library!

Join our afternoon and dive into a world of language, culture and creativity. Our free workshops are organised by different communities and have lots of fun activities:

Bulgarian
Activity: Martenitsa workshop
Join our Martenitsa Workshop (an engaging activity for all ages) and explore the Bulgarian tradition of twisted red and white threads, symbolizing health, good luck and celebrating the coming of spring. Children love creating their own Martenitsa to wear on their wrists or attach to clothes, decorating them with fun DIY shapes.
 
Turkish
Activity: My First Çini Plate
My First Çini Plate is a creative art workshop for children aged 5–12, inspired by the Turkish culture. During the activity, children will explore çini, a traditional Turkish decorative art, by creating their own colourful plate designs using paper plates, markers, and simple patterns. The workshop offers a playful introduction to cultural heritage while encouraging creativity and self-expression in a warm, inclusive setting.

Portuguese
Activity: make your own Boi Bumbá-ox

Activity: Chinese Papercutting
Chinese paper cutting is a cultural symbol of China and popular folk art wihch was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. Known for its unique style, it remains a cherished cultural tradition across China.
In this workshop, we will introduce three commonly used Chinese characters: Shou (longevity), Xi (double happiness), and Chun (spring), as well as three classic motifs: yuanbao (wealth), butterfly (joy), and goldfish (wealth and good qualities). Explore the cultural stories behind these symbols and create your own paper-cut designs to take home.

Activity: Discover the art of Japanese paper cutting & paper folding, together with Japanese traditional toys!
 
Persian
Activity: Come and create your own bookmarker using Persian calligraphy
 
Dutch
Activity: Delfts blue for children
For centuries, Dutch craftsmen have painted stories on Delfts Blue tiles. Children can continue this tradition by creating their own tile in classic blue and white. They may choose an old Dutch scene, a pattern inspired by history, or a familiar character from a picture book — perhaps Miffy, the famous Dutch bunny.
A hands-on, creative activity where tradition meets imagination.

International Mother Language Day, proclaimed by UNESCO, celebrates the power of linguistic and cultural diversity every year on February 21. By cherishing our mother tongues, we strengthen traditions, promote understanding and bring people closer together.
