Grootouders hebben een onmisbare rol als verhalenvertellers. Ze zijn de bewakers van de sprookjes, de fantasieverhalen van een cultuur en de verhalen geïnspireerd door ware gebeurtenissen in hun familie of land. Verhalen die generaties en culturen met elkaar verbinden, de identiteit en familiebanden versterken en belangrijke levenslessen vertellen. Maar wat als grootouders ver weg wonen in een ander land en regelmatig verhalen vertellen niet meer vanzelfsprekend is door de afstand?
 
Barbara Butta, community librarian bij de Bibliotheek Eindhoven (betrokken bij Van Alle Talen Thuis), verzamelde tientallen verhalen van grootouders uit veertien landen in hun moedertaal. Opa's en oma's deelden hun verhalen, in hun eigen handschrift, soms met bijpassende tekeningen en foto’s. De expositie Grootouderverhalen uit de hele wereld omvat een selectie van deze verhalen en eert de rol van grootouders bij het doorgeven van verhalen en taal.
 
Op zaterdag 31 januari om 13:30 uur is de officiële opening van deze expositie. De expositie is gratis te bezoeken tijdens de openingstijden van de Bibliotheek Best tot 25 februari 2026.

Programma van de opening op 31 januari:
Inloop: 13:00 uur
Opening expositie: 13:30 uur (oa. met live muziek van Paola Tásai )
Einde programma: 14:30 uur (met evt. uitloop tot 15:00 uur)

Toegang: Gratis, maar aanmelden is verplicht voor de opening op 31 januari!

Gedurende de hele maand Februari in het teken van "Moedertaal" is er nog een aantal relevante activiteiten in de locaties Eindhoven, Best en Waalre. Check onze website voor meer info over deze activiteiten.

Grandparents play an indispensable role as storytellers. They are the guardians of fairy tales, a culture’s imaginative stories, and stories inspired by real events in their family or country. These are stories that connect generations and cultures, strengthen identity and family bonds, and convey important life lessons. But what happens when grandparents live far away in another country and regular storytelling is no longer self-evident because of the distance?
Barbara Butta, community librarian at the Eindhoven Public Library (involved in Van Alle Talen Thuis), collected dozens of stories from grandparents from fourteen countries in their mother tongue. Grandmothers and grandfathers shared their stories in their own handwriting, sometimes accompanied by drawings and photographs. The exhibition Grandparent Stories from Around the World presents a selection of these stories and honors the role of grandparents in passing on stories and language.

The official opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, January 31 at 1:30 PM. The exhibition can be visited free of charge during the opening hours of the Best Public Library until February 25, 2026.

Program of the opening on Saturday Januari 31:
Doors open: 1:00 PM
Exhibition opening: 1:30 PM (including live music by Paola Tásai)
End of program: 2:30 PM (with possible extension until 3:00 PM)

Admission: Free, but registration is required for the opening on Saturday, Januari 31!

Throughout the entire month of February, dedicated to the theme “Mother Tongue,” several related activities will take place at the Eindhoven, Best, and Waalre locations. Check our website for more information about these activities.

Tijdens de activiteiten van de Bibliotheek Eindhoven worden er mogelijk foto’s gemaakt, voor eventueel gebruik op social media of in gedrukte of online uitingen.
