Konstantin Gilevich, plaatsvervangend directeur van het Roerich Centrum te Eindhoven zal een lezing houden over de bijzonderheid van het Roerich Pact, waarover een expositie in de Bibliotheek Best te zien is vanaf 4 tot 30 oktober. De lezing wordt omlijst met live pianomuziek door Olga van der Pennen.

Het Roerich-pact, ook wel het “Rode Kruis voor kunst en cultuur” genoemd, is een verdrag uit 1935, dat bedoeld is om in geval van gewapend conflict culturele, religieuze en wetenschappelijke instellingen en monumenten, die als het ware boven de menselijke conflicten verheven zijn, te vrijwaren tegen vernietiging. Het is een voorganger van de Haagse conventie voor de bescherming van cultuurgoederen bij gewapende conflicten uit 1954. Het symbool van het Roerich-pact is de Pax Cultura, een vredessymbool. De drie massieve, rode bollen staan voor kunst, wetenschap en religie/spiritualiteit binnen een grotere cirkel van cultuur. De kleur rood symboliseert het ene bloed dat we als mensheid delen.

The Roerich Pact, also known as the “Red Cross for art and culture,” is a 1935 treaty intended to protect cultural, religious, and scientific institutions and monuments, which are, as it were, above human conflicts, from destruction in the event of armed conflict. It is a predecessor to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. The symbol of the Roerich Pact is the Pax Cultura, a symbol of peace. The three solid red spheres represent art, science, and religion/spirituality within a larger circle of culture. The color red symbolizes the one blood we share as humanity.
