We are becoming increasingly aware of other cultures around us. As humans, we may fundamentally struggle with and feel uncomfortable around the unknown, but suppressing this or feeling ashamed of it only hinders growth and connection. In this activity, I try to break down the walls that stand between us and others. With the help of humor and compassion, we look at what we actually experience in intercultural communication. In a small group setting with room for dialogue, we explore together what culture really means, which feelings want to be heard but sometimes are not, and how we are actually very similar in our unique characteristics.

Who is it for?
All ages and target groups are welcome! The more diversity, the better. Whether you move easily between cultures or still feel resistance and want to learn more about it, everyone is welcome and valuable.
During this activity, we will look together at what culture can mean and how our frames of reference differ from each other and what funny or sometimes awkward situations this can lead to. After this activity, you will go home with more knowledge about how individuals differ from each other, where we find our similarities, and hopefully with more understanding and empathy for people who are more like you than you might initially think.

Language
The language of communication is English, unless everyone understands Dutch. If you understand English in general but don't speak it, you are still welcome to join. You can always talk in Dutch in small groups and with the workshop leader.

Who is Isabelle Booij?
"I am Isabelle, 28 years old, and after living in various Dutch cities, the United States, Belgium, and Italy, I recently moved to Best. I have an academic background in education, linguistics, and teaching. With this background, I now derive a lot of energy from advising on change management within organizations, especially when it comes to intercultural issues. As a teacher, I also get a lot of energy from bringing together all kinds of identities within a classroom and seeing each individual for who they are. My master's degree in intercultural communication has provided me with the tools to actively engage in this and help others take steps forward in their interactions with people who, at first glance, may not seem similar to them.

We zijn ons steeds bewuster van andere culturen om ons heen. Als mens kunnen we in de basis moeite hebben en ons oncomfortabel voelen bij het onbekende, maar dit wegstoppen of hier schaamte over voelen staat groei en verbinding alleen maar in de weg. In deze activiteit probeer ik samen muren te doorbreken die tussen ons en de ander in staan. Met behulp van humor en compassie kijken we naar wat we nou eigenlijk ervaren in interculturele communicatie. Met een kleine groepsopzet en ruimte voor dialoog gaan we samen onderzoeken wat cultuur nou eigenlijk echt inhoudt en betekent, welke gevoelens gehoord willen worden maar dat soms niet worden en hoe we in onze unieke eigenschappen eigenlijk gewoon heel erg op elkaar lijken.

Voor wie?
Elke leeftijd en doelgroep is welkom! Hoe meer diversiteit hoe beter en of je nu met heel veel gemak tussen culturen beweegt of nog weerstand voelt hierbij en er meer over wil leren, alles is welkom en waardevol.

Tijdens deze activiteit kijken we samen naar wat cultuur allemaal in kan houden en hoe onze referentiekaders van elkaar verschillen en tot welke grappige of soms ook schurende situaties dit kan leiden. Je gaat na deze activiteit naar huis met meer kennis over hoe individuen van elkaar verschillen, waar we onze gelijkenissen vinden en hopelijk met meer begrip en empathie voor mensen die meer op je lijken dan je in eerste instantie zou denken.

Voertaal
Voertaal is Engels, tenzij iedereen Nederlands verstaat. Volg je Engels op grote lijnen maar spreek je het niet, kom dan vooral. Er kan sowieso in groepjes en met de workshopgever in het Nederlands gepraat worden.

Wie is Isabelle Booij?
"Ik ben Isabelle, 28 jaar oud en na in verscheidene Nederlandse steden, de Verenigde Staten, België en Italië te hebben gewoond woon ik nu sinds kort in Best. Ik ben academisch opgeleid tot onderwijskundige, taalwetenschapper en docent. Vanuit die achtergrond haal ik nu veel energie uit het adviseren op het gebied van veranderingsmanagement binnen organisaties, vooral wanneer dit interculturele vraagstukken betreft. Als docent krijg ik ook veel energie van het samenbrengen van allerlei identiteiten binnen een klaslokaal en elk individu zien voor wie die is. Mijn master in interculturele communicatie heeft me van de handvatten voorzien om hier actief mee aan de slag te kunnen gaan en anderen stapjes vooruit te helpen in hun omgang met mensen die gevoelsmatig in eerste instantie niet op hen lijken."
